Two years ago I learnt to crochet. at the time I was on residence in Vienna. My friend who taught me how to crochet also informed me that certain wools glowed under ultra violet light.
this led to me making a 40m long laurel tunnel full of luminescent spider webs for the Larmer Tree festival. And from there I also built a shack out of wool at Glastonbury this year.
Its a time consuming and generally exhausting business working with wool, but for some reason I am slightly obsessed. I love the ideas associated with it, that the only way to make a physical model of hyperbolic space you have to crochet it, that the unprovable theory of everything is composed in the same manner as yarn.
It is these associations with wool and science and geometry that have most bonded me to wool, to weaving, and also the symbolism of the weaver, the story teller as an artist.
I realised today after a 7 hour session of weaving a scene in a gothic cathedral that was a work in progress that I needed to be doing a lot more weaving. Enough so that my ideas were clear for next year. So I decided to start this blog and lo and behold there it was- wrapped in cotton wool wasn't taken. Brilliant! and so now I have to blog regularly my wool exploits.
